The ecological diversity allows for more than 10 different habitats, with great scenic beauty and opportunities for research. At the Palo Verde, we can identify 13 habitats of low mountains rich in calcite (calcium carbonate) and steep hillsides, lagoons and brackish water areas and mangroves. We can also find flooded forests, of evergreen trees, deciduous forests, gallery forests and plains. Scientists believe that some 7,000 years ago, the sea covered the region permanently with the exception of the mountains. This system of water creates the ideal conditions to attract the greatest concentration of birds in Central America. The lagoons offer an excellent feeding grounds and nestled in the dry season.
